E&I Food Concepts is a social enterprise founded in July 2015 by Singaporean chefs, Enoch Teo and Immanuel Tee. They opened their first Garcons outlet (a casual and affordable French eatery) in Essen @ The Pinnacle. E&I also provide B2B food consultancy, menu planning, corporate luncheons, and catering services. They believe that French fine dining cuisine should be accessible and affordable to everyone, and focuses on creating fuss-free gourmet dishes using the best quality ingredients.
E&I target demographics
Many youths are aimless and have no goal in life. This may cause them to get involved in bad company and negative influences which will eventually lead to involvement in illegal activities. E&I Food Concepts identified these social issues and wanted to play a part in addressing them.
The social enterprise takes in ex-offenders and youths-at-risk from boys’ home, reformative training centre, and off the streets.
E&I provides troubled youths both full-time employment and apprenticeship. E&I also trains them, who may have no experience, in cooking techniques and French cuisine.
In doing so, E&I empowers the youths with the right skills to pursue a culinary career. Furthermore, E&I believes that these youths will flourish with mentoring and life skills. To date, it has trained over 20 youths and currently employ 3. Most of the boys have managed to find work elsewhere.
E&I provides second chances and support to ex-offenders so that they are able to support themselves and at the same time, deter them from committing offences again.
DBS Foundation Social Enterprise Grant
In October 2015, E&I beat about 300 applicants to become one of 11 groups that received the DBS Foundation Social Enterprise Grant. In the Straits Times article “Cooking their way out of difficult times” published on 13 Dec 2015, DBS Foundation head, Patsian Low, mentioned that their proposal was innovative. It leverage trends such as affordable gourmet and created a hawker bar business model that was unique and refreshing in a matured F&B industry.
Enoch Teo personal journey
Enoch Teo understands what it means to be a youth with bad company. He hopes to lend a helping hand to troubled youths in guiding them to right path. He was first exposed to the F&B industry when he worked as a cook at the age of 15, after dropping out of school. Back then, he was an at-risk youth who was involved in gangs and drugs. He was arrested for car breaking and drug offences at 16 and put under a 1-year rehabilitation programme.
After the programme, he decided to pursue a career in the kitchen. He worked in 2-Michelin starred Restaurant Andre where he met his current business partner, Immanuel Tee. Enoch knows that it was only because of support from his family, colleagues, ex-bosses and mentors that all these was possible.
